Why does Canada insist on the inclusion of an Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) clause in all its ‘free trade’ deals?
Canadians lose hundreds of millions of dollars every year on these settlements while Canadian international mining corporations benefit. The companies use investor-state lawsuits to bully governments into backtracking on environmental regulations.
There is a long history of abuse in the developing world involving Canadian mining companies. They’ve frequently been shown engaging in community conflict, environmental damage, and unethical behaviour.
The ISDS is a corporate con game played outside domestic legal rules. Trudeau continues to demonstrate his environmental double-face & ethical failures.
